U.S. health officials investigate new outbreak of parasite cyclospora

Federal health authorities are investigating a new outbreak of the intestinal parasite cyclospora, though they have not yet pinpointed the specific food source responsible for the illnesses. The Food and Drug Administration has confirmed it is actively working to trace the contamination, but as of now, no particular product has been linked to the cases.

Cyclospora is a microscopic parasite that causes an infection known as cyclosporiasis. People typically contract it by consuming contaminated food or water. Symptoms often include watery diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, and fatigue, which can last for weeks if left untreated. The infection is most commonly reported during the spring and summer months in the United States, often tied to imported fresh produce like berries, herbs, or salad greens.

The current investigation is in its early stages. The FDA has not released details on the number of confirmed cases or the geographic spread of the outbreak. Health officials are urging clinicians to consider cyclosporiasis in patients with prolonged diarrheal illness and to report suspected cases to local health departments.

Consumers are advised to practice good food safety habits, such as washing fruits and vegetables thoroughly, though this may not fully eliminate the parasite. Cooking food to the proper temperature is the most reliable way to kill cyclospora. The FDA will continue to update the public as more information becomes available.
