VHC Health’s plans for S. Carlin Springs facility face questions from local residents

Future neighbors of a planned behavioral-health and rehabilitation compound on S. Carlin Springs Road are pressing for more details about management and oversight. Representatives of VHC Health and Lifepoint Behavioral Health met with local residents during a July 16 meeting convened by the Glencarlyn Civic Association to discuss the proposed 146-bed facility.

Under the plan moving forward, the facility would serve patients needing acute psychiatric care and long-term rehabilitation. But residents who live near the site voiced concerns about security, staffing levels, and how the facility would handle potential disruptions in the quiet residential area. Some asked whether the hospital would accept involuntary admissions or patients with a history of violence.

VHC officials said the facility would operate under strict protocols and that Lifepoint, a national provider, would manage day-to-day operations. They emphasized that the goal is to fill a gap in local mental health services, noting that many patients currently must travel far from home for care.

Still, several attendees said they felt the presentation lacked specifics on how the facility would integrate with the neighborhood. One resident asked about traffic from ambulances and staff vehicles, while another questioned whether the building's design would include adequate buffers from nearby homes.

The civic association plans to continue gathering input from the community before issuing a formal position on the project. No timeline for a final decision has been announced.
