Kansas City health and faith leaders team up to help minimize Medicaid coverage loss

Kansas City health and faith leaders team up to help minimize Medicaid coverage loss

A coalition of health advocates and religious leaders in Kansas City is meeting every two weeks to prepare for a wave of Medicaid disenrollments expected to hit the region. New state policies, including work requirements and mandatory eligibility checks twice a year, are projected to push millions of adults off the rolls nationwide. Local organizers say the changes will disproportionately affect low-income families, people with disabilities, and communities of color.

The group, which includes pastors, nurses, and social service coordinators, is focused on outreach and education. They are training volunteers to help residents navigate the new paperwork requirements and connect them with alternative insurance options if they lose coverage. One leader described the effort as a "safety net for the safety net," noting that many people do not realize they are at risk until they show up for a doctor's appointment with a lapsed card.

Faith leaders are also using their pulpits to spread the word. Several congregations have set up tables after Sunday services where members can check their enrollment status. Health advocates warn that even a short gap in coverage can lead to skipped medications, untreated chronic conditions, and emergency room visits that cost the system more in the long run.

The coalition plans to ramp up its efforts in the coming months as the first round of eligibility checks begins. Organizers say they are not trying to fight the policy itself, but rather to make sure no one falls through the cracks without knowing their options.
