Environmental activist Sonam Wangchuk has now spent 19 days on a hunger strike, and his condition is raising serious concern among supporters and medical professionals. The 58-year-old has lost 9.1 kilograms since he began the protest, and his health is deteriorating rapidly.
Wangchuk, known for his work in the Ladakh region, started the hunger strike to demand action on climate change and the protection of fragile mountain ecosystems. He has been refusing solid food, taking only water and salt. Doctors monitoring him have warned that his body is showing signs of strain, including low blood pressure and electrolyte imbalance.
Friends and fellow activists are urging him to call off the strike. They argue that his life is too valuable to risk, and that he can continue his fight from a stronger position once he recovers. Some have pointed out that a prolonged hunger strike can cause irreversible damage to organs, even if the person later resumes eating.
Wangchuk has not publicly indicated any plan to stop. His supporters say he is determined to push the government for concrete commitments on renewable energy and sustainable development in Ladakh. Local officials have offered to meet with him, but so far no breakthrough has been reported.
The situation has drawn attention across India, with many people expressing solidarity online. However, the growing worry is that Wangchuk may not have much longer before his body gives out.
