The University of North Texas Health Science Center in Fort Worth is undergoing a major reorganization, reducing its number of colleges from six to four in a move officials say will streamline operations and support future expansion. The restructuring is expected to save the institution roughly $600,000 each year.
Administrators framed the cuts not as a reduction in services but as a strategic pivot to double the size of the campus over the next decade. By merging smaller, overlapping academic units, the health center aims to eliminate administrative redundancies and redirect funds toward faculty hires, research, and clinical programs.
The consolidation merges the College of Pharmacy with the College of Biomedical and Translational Sciences, while the School of Public Health and the School of Health Professions will also be combined into a single college. The remaining two colleges -- the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine and the College of Nursing and Health Innovation -- will stay intact.
University leaders stressed that no degree programs are being eliminated and that current students will not see disruptions to their coursework or graduation timelines. The changes primarily affect administrative structures and leadership roles.
The $600,000 in annual savings will come from reducing dean-level positions and consolidating support staff. Officials say that money will be reinvested into student scholarships and new clinical partnerships. The reorganization is set to take effect at the start of the next fiscal year.
