SGMC Health Celebrates Graduation of Resident Physicians, Retaining Talent in South Georgia

SGMC Health celebrated a major milestone in its medical education program on Friday, June 5, with the graduation of 18 resident physicians. The ceremony recognized the completion of rigorous training in family medicine, internal medicine, and general surgery, marking a significant achievement for both the doctors and the health system.

Officials highlighted that many of the graduates have chosen to remain in the region to practice medicine. This retention is a key goal of the residency program, which aims to address the shortage of healthcare providers in rural South Georgia. By training physicians locally, the health system hopes to build a sustainable workforce that understands the unique needs of the community.

The graduating residents will now move on to fellowships, hospital positions, or private practice, with several accepting offers within the SGMC Health network. The program continues to grow, with new classes of residents starting each year to fill the pipeline of skilled doctors. For the health system, the graduation is not just a celebration of individual achievement but a strategic investment in the long-term health of the region.
