Placer County Public Health reports 3 confirmed measles cases, fourth suspected case

Public health officials in Placer County have confirmed three cases of measles and are investigating a fourth suspected infection. The announcement, made Monday, has prompted a swift public health response to contain the highly contagious virus.

Measles is a serious respiratory disease that spreads easily through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Symptoms typically begin with a high fever, cough, runny nose, and red, watery eyes, followed by a characteristic red rash that spreads across the body. Individuals who may have been exposed are being urged to review their vaccination status immediately.

The Placer County Public Health Department is actively conducting contact tracing to identify and notify anyone who may have been exposed to the infected individuals. Officials emphasize that vaccination is the most effective protection against measles. The measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine is safe and highly effective, with two doses providing about 97% protection against the virus.

Residents are advised to check with their healthcare providers to ensure they and their families are up-to-date on their MMR vaccinations, especially before any international travel or attendance at large gatherings. Anyone experiencing symptoms should contact their healthcare provider by phone before visiting a clinic or hospital to prevent potential spread in waiting rooms.
