A psychiatric hospital on the outskirts of Paris has introduced an unusual but effective form of therapy: donkeys. Patients struggling with severe depression, anxiety, and other mental health conditions are finding unexpected relief through interactions with these gentle animals.
The program, launched at the hospital in the Essonne region, involves guided sessions where patients groom, walk, and simply spend time with the donkeys. Staff report that the animals have a calming effect, helping patients lower their anxiety levels and improve their ability to communicate. For many, the non-judgmental presence of a donkey provides a safe space to express emotions that are difficult to verbalize.
One patient described the experience as a welcome break from traditional talk therapy, noting that the donkeys do not ask questions or offer opinions. The animals simply listen and respond to gentle touch. Psychiatrists involved in the project say the animal-assisted approach helps patients reconnect with their emotions and build trust, which can be a major hurdle in recovery.
The donkeys are carefully selected for their calm temperament and are handled by trained therapists. The hospital plans to expand the program, citing positive feedback from both patients and medical staff. While unconventional, the therapy donkeys are proving that sometimes the best medicine comes on four legs.
