A new survey reveals that weight loss medications are significantly raising healthcare expenses for employers, with the vast majority bracing for even steeper costs ahead. The Business Group on Health polled employers and found that 87% anticipate that spending on these drugs will continue to climb. Despite the financial strain, many companies are hesitant to drop coverage for GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy, which are widely used for weight management.
However, employers report a critical concern: they are not yet seeing clear evidence of long-term health benefits from these medications. The survey indicates that businesses remain uncertain about how to balance the high upfront costs against potential future savings from improved employee health. Without proven long-term outcomes, such as reduced rates of diabetes or heart disease, companies struggle to justify the ongoing expense.
This uncertainty leaves employers in a difficult position. They want to support worker health but fear that covering these drugs without a clear return on investment will continue to strain their budgets. As a result, many are exploring strategies like stricter eligibility criteria or requiring lifestyle programs alongside the medication. For now, the trend points to rising costs with no immediate relief in sight.
