Health officials urge caution for Gulf Coast beachgoers during surge of deadly bacterial infections

Louisiana health authorities are advising beachgoers to exercise extra care this summer as cases of a potentially deadly, flesh-eating bacteria continue to climb along the Gulf Coast. The warning comes amid a noticeable uptick in infections linked to warm coastal waters, where the bacteria thrive in brackish and saltwater environments.

The bacteria, often associated with raw oyster consumption and open wounds exposed to seawater, can cause severe skin infections that may rapidly destroy tissue. In some cases, the infection becomes systemic, leading to sepsis and death, especially in individuals with weakened immune systems or chronic liver conditions. Health officials emphasize that while the overall risk remains low for healthy people, the recent surge warrants heightened awareness.

Beachgoers are advised to avoid entering the water if they have fresh cuts, scrapes, or surgical wounds, and to cover any existing wounds with waterproof bandages. Wearing protective footwear can also help prevent minor injuries that might become entry points for the bacteria. Those who do go in the water should rinse off thoroughly with soap and fresh water afterward, and seek medical attention immediately if they notice redness, swelling, or pain that worsens around a wound.

Officials also remind the public that eating raw or undercooked oysters carries a separate but related risk, particularly for people with underlying health conditions. Cooking shellfish thoroughly kills the bacteria, and those at higher risk should consider avoiding raw oysters altogether. The advisory is expected to remain in effect through the peak summer months, when water temperatures are highest and bacterial growth is most active.
