State health officials have broadened a public health alert, confirming new locations where individuals may have been exposed to measles. The list now includes a popular family destination and a pediatric care center, raising concerns about potential spread among vulnerable populations.
The exposures are connected to a previously identified international traveler who visited several sites while contagious. Officials confirmed the infected individual was at the Loveland Living Planet Aquarium in Draper on specific dates and times. Additionally, a Primary Children's Miller Campus facility in Lehi is listed as an exposure site.
Measles is a highly contagious viral illness that spreads through the air. Symptoms typically begin with a high fever, cough, runny nose, and red, watery eyes, followed by a distinctive red rash several days later. The virus can remain in the air for up to two hours after an infected person leaves an area.
Health authorities are urging anyone who was at these locations during the specified times to review their vaccination status and monitor for symptoms. Individuals born after 1957 who have not received two doses of the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine or have not had a prior measles infection are considered susceptible. Those who develop symptoms should contact their healthcare provider by phone before visiting a facility to prevent further exposure. Vaccination remains the most effective method of prevention.
