Lancaster County ranks 9th in US for measles cases as health systems tighten precautions

Lancaster County has climbed to ninth place nationwide for the number of measles cases reported within a single county or region so far in 2026. The ranking reflects a troubling trend as local health systems move to strengthen infection control measures in response to the outbreak.

According to public health data, the county has recorded dozens of confirmed cases since the start of the year, placing it among the top ten hotspots in the country. The majority of infections have been linked to unvaccinated individuals, with several clusters emerging in schools and community settings. Health officials say the virus has spread rapidly in part due to low vaccination rates in certain pockets of the county.

In response, hospitals and clinics across Lancaster have implemented stricter screening protocols. Visitors and patients showing symptoms such as fever, cough, or rash are now being directed to separate entrances or isolation areas. Some facilities have also limited elective procedures and restricted visitor access to pediatric and immunocompromised units.

The Pennsylvania Department of Health has deployed additional vaccination teams to affected areas and is urging residents to check their immunization records. A single dose of the MMR vaccine is about 93 percent effective at preventing measles, while two doses are about 97 percent effective.

Local school districts have also taken action, excluding unvaccinated students from classrooms during outbreak periods. Parents are being asked to provide proof of vaccination or a valid medical exemption before children can return.

Despite these efforts, health officials warn that the outbreak may continue for several more weeks. They are asking anyone with symptoms to call ahead before visiting a doctor's office or emergency room to avoid exposing others in waiting areas.
