Baltimore health officials announced Tuesday that two foxes found in the city's Roland Park neighborhood have tested positive for rabies. The Baltimore City Health Department confirmed the results, urging residents in the area to remain cautious.
The infected foxes were discovered in the residential neighborhood, prompting a public health alert. Officials have not specified exactly where or when the animals were found, but they are advising anyone who may have come into contact with a fox or other stray animal in Roland Park to seek medical attention immediately.
Rabies is a viral disease that affects the central nervous system and is almost always fatal once symptoms appear. It is typically spread through the saliva of an infected animal, usually via a bite. The health department stressed that residents should avoid all contact with wild animals, especially those acting strangely or appearing sick.
Symptoms of rabies in animals can include unusual aggression, excessive drooling, difficulty moving, or a general lack of fear of humans. Anyone who sees an animal displaying these signs is asked to contact Baltimore Animal Control.
The department also reminded pet owners to ensure their dogs and cats are up to date on rabies vaccinations, as this is the most effective way to protect both pets and people from the disease.
