State health officials have now recorded 906 cases of cyclosporiasis since the start of May, with 39 new infections added since August 4. The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services posted the updated figures on its public dashboard, showing the parasite continues to spread through the warmer months.

Cyclosporiasis is an intestinal illness caused by the microscopic parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis. People typically get it by consuming food or water contaminated with the organism. Symptoms include watery diarrhea, cramping, bloating, nausea, and fatigue, which can last for weeks if not treated with the right antibiotics.

The current outbreak has hit multiple counties across the state, though health officials have not identified a single common source. In past years, fresh produce like cilantro, raspberries, and bagged salad mixes have been linked to similar outbreaks. Investigators are still interviewing patients and tracing food histories to narrow down the culprit.

Public health experts remind residents that washing produce under running water helps but does not always remove Cyclospora, since the parasite can cling to rough surfaces like leaves and berries. Peeling or cooking fruits and vegetables is the most reliable way to kill it.

Anyone with prolonged diarrhea or severe stomach issues should see a doctor and mention their food history. The illness is treatable with trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, commonly known as Bactrim, but many people do not seek care early because symptoms can appear days after exposure.

The department advises that case counts may rise as reporting catches up, and they will continue to update the public as new information becomes available.
