Philadelphia Health Department announces Heat Health Emergency ahead of forecast high temps

The Philadelphia Department of Public Health has issued a Heat Health Emergency set to take effect Wednesday morning. The declaration starts at 11 a.m. on July 1 and will remain in place until 8 p.m. on Saturday, July 4. The move comes in response to a forecast of dangerously high temperatures expected to grip the region over the next several days.

During the emergency, the city will activate cooling centers across Philadelphia, offering residents a place to escape the heat. Officials are urging people to check on elderly neighbors, those with chronic health conditions, and anyone without air conditioning. The health department also warns against leaving children or pets in parked vehicles, even for a short time, as interior temperatures can become lethal within minutes.

Residents are advised to stay hydrated, limit outdoor activity during peak afternoon hours, and wear lightweight clothing. The city will also suspend utility shutoffs for nonpayment during the emergency period. Anyone seeking a cooling center location or transportation to one can call the city's heatline. The emergency declaration allows the health department to coordinate resources and outreach more effectively, particularly for vulnerable populations. With the July 4 holiday weekend approaching, officials stress the importance of staying safe while celebrating, especially for those attending outdoor events or fireworks displays.
