As back-to-school season begins, MU Health psychiatrist shares tips on child anxiety

As classrooms reopen across the region, MU Health Care psychiatrist Dr. Laine Young Walker is speaking out about the rising tide of childhood anxiety and what parents can do to help. Rather than dismissing worries as simple nerves, Dr. Walker encourages families to understand that anxiety in kids is a real and common response to transitions, new social pressures, and academic expectations.

According to Dr. Walker, anxiety often shows up differently in children than in adults. Younger kids might complain of stomachaches or headaches, while teens may become irritable or withdraw from family activities. She emphasizes that these physical complaints are not faked; they are genuine signals of emotional distress. Parents should watch for changes in sleep patterns, refusal to attend school, or excessive worry about things like tests, friendships, or even lunchtime seating.

The good news, Dr. Walker says, is that most anxiety is manageable with the right support. She advises parents to validate their child's feelings first, rather than rushing to fix the problem. Simple phrases like "I can see this is really hard for you" go a long way. She also recommends establishing consistent routines for meals, homework, and bedtime, since predictability helps calm an anxious brain.

For kids who are particularly nervous, Dr. Walker suggests practicing deep breathing together or doing a quick "worry check-in" each evening. She warns against avoiding school or activities altogether, as that can reinforce fear. Instead, parents should gently encourage participation while offering a safe place to talk afterward. If anxiety begins to interfere with daily life for more than a couple of weeks, she advises reaching out to a pediatrician or mental health professional.

Dr. Walker reminds parents that some anxiety is normal and even helpful, as it pushes kids to prepare and adapt. The goal is not to eliminate all stress, but to teach children that they can handle tough moments. With patience and open communication, families can turn the back-to-school season into a time of growth rather than dread.
