Hundreds of nurses and healthcare supporters gathered in Bronson Park on Saturday, voicing alarm over proposed changes to federal health care funding. The event was part of a national "Red Alert" tour organized by the Michigan Nurses Association, with similar protests taking place in cities across the country.
The rally focused on concerns that shifting federal policies could lead to significant cuts in hospital budgets, staffing levels, and patient services. Nurses held signs reading "Save Our Patients" and "Hands Off Our Care," while speakers warned that reduced funding would hurt the most vulnerable populations, including the elderly and low-income families.
"We are seeing the warning signs," said one registered nurse who works at Beacon Kalamazoo. "If these cuts go through, it means longer wait times, fewer beds, and less support for the nurses who are already stretched thin."
The protest comes as lawmakers debate changes to Medicaid and other federal healthcare programs. Organizers called on local representatives to protect funding and ensure that hospitals have the resources needed to maintain safe staffing ratios.
The event was peaceful but urgent in tone. Many attendees said they felt compelled to speak out after witnessing the strain on healthcare workers during the pandemic. "We cannot go backward," another nurse said. "Our patients deserve better."
The rally ended with a march around the park, as participants chanted for fair wages and stable funding. No counter-protests were reported.
