As the Easter holiday approaches, state health officials are urging the public to avoid purchasing live baby birds, such as chicks and ducklings, as gifts. This annual reminder comes with a serious public health warning due to the risk of Salmonella infection.
These birds, even when they appear healthy and clean, can carry Salmonella bacteria in their droppings and on their feathers, feet, and beaks. The germs can easily spread to anything in the areas where the birds live or roam. People, especially young children, can become infected by simply holding, cuddling, or touching the birds or their environments and then touching their mouths or food.
Salmonella infections often occur after consuming contaminated food or water or touching animals, their waste, or places they live. Symptoms include diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps, which can be severe for infants, elderly individuals, and those with weakened immune systems. Officials emphasize that these animals are not suitable pets for young children and advise thorough handwashing with soap and water after any contact with poultry. The recommendation is to enjoy spring chicks in pictures and stories, not as live presents that pose a health risk to families.
