Nearly 60% of college students with a psychosis diagnosis are not receiving the recommended mental health treatment

Nearly 60% of college students with a psychosis diagnosis are not receiving the recommended mental health treatment

A new study reveals that close to 60 percent of college students who have been diagnosed with psychosis are not getting the mental health treatment that experts recommend. While psychosis itself is relatively rare in the United States, affecting roughly three percent of the population, researchers say it remains a serious public health issue. Many people delay seeking help, and the new findings suggest that young adults on college campuses are particularly vulnerable to falling through the cracks.

The study looked at data from thousands of students and found that among those with a formal psychosis diagnosis, a majority were not receiving consistent therapy or medication. Experts point to several possible reasons. Stigma around severe mental illness may keep students from reaching out. Others may not know where to find affordable care on or off campus. Some students might also downplay their symptoms, thinking they will go away on their own.

Psychosis can include hallucinations, delusions, or disorganized thinking. When left untreated, it can lead to worse academic performance, social isolation, and a higher risk of self-harm. Researchers stress that early and consistent treatment is key to managing the condition. They hope the study will push colleges to improve outreach and make mental health services more accessible. Without changes, many young people may continue to struggle alone.
