A man from Carshalton, south London, has reached a remarkable milestone by completing his 1,000th parkrun, a feat he credits with saving his life after a long battle with mental health issues. Darren Wood, who began running the weekly 5-kilometer events over a decade ago, says the simple act of showing up each Saturday morning became his anchor during his darkest days.
Wood struggled with severe depression and anxiety for years, often feeling isolated and without direction. He first joined a parkrun on a whim, looking for a way to get out of the house. What started as a casual jog quickly turned into a lifeline. The routine, the fresh air, and the quiet camaraderie of other runners gave him a reason to keep moving forward.
"I was in a very dark place, and parkrun gave me structure," Wood said. "It was something I could rely on, and the community never judged me. They just let me be there." Over the years, he has run at dozens of different locations, but his local course in Nonsuch Park remains his home turf. His 1,000th run was celebrated by friends and fellow participants who have watched his transformation.
Wood now speaks openly about his mental health journey, hoping to encourage others to find their own small, consistent victories. He emphasizes that the achievement is not about speed or competition, but about persistence. "Some days I walked the whole thing. The point is, I showed up," he added. His story is a testament to how community and routine can quietly rebuild a life.
