A Chinese official has reiterated that Taiwan must be included in the World Health Assembly, arguing that the island's absence weakens global health security. Speaking on the matter, a spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office stated that Taiwan belongs at the international health forum and should not be shut out due to political reasons.
The official described Taiwan as a reliable partner and a force for good in global health efforts. They argued that excluding Taiwan from the World Health Assembly is not only unfair but also counterproductive, as the island has valuable experience and resources to contribute. The statement emphasized that global health cannot afford to ignore Taiwan, especially in an era of pandemic threats and emerging diseases.
The comments come ahead of the annual World Health Assembly meeting, where Taiwan has repeatedly sought observer status. China maintains that Taiwan, as part of its territory, cannot participate independently in international organizations unless under the One-China framework. However, the official stressed that Taiwan's participation would benefit global health cooperation and urged the international community to support its inclusion.
Critics argue that Taiwan's exclusion creates gaps in disease surveillance and response networks. The island has a strong healthcare system and has successfully managed outbreaks in the past. Supporters of Taiwan's participation say its presence at the World Health Assembly would strengthen collective efforts to address global health challenges.
