A recent study has examined the effects of very-low-calorie ketogenic and Mediterranean diets on gut microbiota, metabolic health, and weight management among patients newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and obesity. The research highlights the significant benefits that dietary choices can have on managing diabetes and improving overall health.
Participants in the study were assigned to either the ketogenic or Mediterranean diet, both of which are known for their distinct nutritional profiles. The ketogenic diet, characterized by high fat and low carbohydrates, was found to lead to substantial improvements in metabolic markers. Meanwhile, the Mediterranean diet, rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and healthy fats, also showed positive effects but with different mechanisms.
Results indicated that those following the ketogenic diet experienced notable weight loss and enhanced metabolic health compared to their Mediterranean diet counterparts. Additionally, changes in gut microbiota were observed, suggesting that diet plays a crucial role in shaping the gut environment, which is increasingly recognized for its importance in metabolic health. This study underscores the potential of dietary interventions in managing type 2 diabetes and obesity effectively.
