Health officials in Carroll County are advising anyone who attended the Mount Airy Fourth of July fireworks display to watch for potential bat exposure. The Carroll County Health Department released a statement saying that individuals at the event may have come into direct contact with bats.
The warning applies to people who were present at the fireworks show, which took place on the evening of July 4. Officials are asking attendees to check their personal belongings, such as blankets, chairs, and bags, for any signs of bats. They also recommend checking children and pets, as bats can be small and difficult to notice.
Bat bites or scratches can be very minor and might not leave a visible mark. However, bats are known carriers of rabies, a serious viral disease. The health department stresses that anyone who thinks they may have touched a bat or been bitten should seek medical advice immediately. Post-exposure treatment is highly effective if started soon after contact.
Residents are also reminded not to handle bats directly. If a bat is found inside a home or near people, it should be left alone and a local animal control agency should be contacted for safe removal. The health department continues to investigate the situation and urges anyone with concerns to call their office for guidance.
