Health officials warn of possible measles exposure at SFO, San Jose locations

Health officials warn of possible measles exposure at SFO, San Jose locations

Santa Clara County health officials are asking the public to watch for symptoms after a resident with a confirmed case of measles traveled through San Francisco International Airport and visited two businesses in San Jose while contagious. The infected individual passed through SFO's Terminal 3 on a specific date, though officials have not released the exact flight details. The person also visited a Walmart location and a Target store in San Jose on the same day.

Measles is a highly contagious virus that spreads through coughing, sneezing, or even being in the same room as an infected person. The virus can linger in the air for up to two hours after the infected person leaves. Symptoms typically appear seven to 21 days after exposure and include high fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, and a distinctive rash that starts on the face and spreads downward.

Health officials advise anyone who was at these locations during the exposure window to check their vaccination records. Those who are unvaccinated or unsure of their status should monitor for symptoms and contact a healthcare provider immediately if they develop signs of illness. The county is not recommending mass testing but urges people to avoid visiting hospitals or clinics without calling ahead to prevent further spread. This case comes amid a rise in measles outbreaks globally, driven in part by declining vaccination rates.
