Deion Sanders is making sure his family learns from his health scare. The Colorado football coach, who recently revealed his bladder cancer diagnosis was caught early thanks to a routine scan, has convinced his eldest son to finally get checked. Sanders has been open about how a simple preventive exam saved his life, and he is now pushing that same urgency onto the men closest to him.
His son, who has not publicly shared his own medical history, agreed to undergo a full health screening after watching his father's recovery. Sanders has spoken repeatedly about how many men avoid doctor visits until symptoms force them to go. He credits his early detection to a scan he almost skipped, and he does not want his family to make that mistake.
The initiative is personal for Sanders, who returned to coaching shortly after his treatment. He has used his platform to stress that regular checkups are not optional, especially for Black men who face higher risks for certain cancers. By starting with his own household, Sanders hopes to set an example that extends beyond the football field. His son's willingness to get checked is the first step in what Sanders calls a necessary conversation about health, accountability, and not waiting until it is too late.
