CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) has confirmed the state’s second measles case of the year, involving a teenager from the Northwest Region who recently traveled internationally. Health officials are urging residents to ensure their vaccinations are up to date as measles remains a highly contagious viral disease.
The teenager, who is currently recovering, had not been vaccinated against measles, raising concerns about the potential for further spread. VDH is actively tracing the teenager's contacts to identify anyone who may have been exposed to the virus.
Measles symptoms typically develop 7 to 14 days after exposure and can include high fever, cough, runny nose, and a distinctive rash. The disease can lead to serious complications, especially in unvaccinated individuals.
Officials emphasize the importance of vaccination as the most effective way to prevent measles outbreaks. The MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) vaccine is recommended for children and adults who have not been vaccinated.
