Vanderbilt Health is preparing to open a new Acute Care Center, but access will be tightly controlled. The facility will serve only existing adult patients who receive a referral directly from a Vanderbilt Health clinician. Walk-up visits will not be accepted, and the center will not see patients referred by doctors outside the Vanderbilt system.
The decision to limit access is part of a broader strategy to streamline care for patients already within the network. By restricting services to referred individuals, the health system aims to reduce bottlenecks in emergency rooms and provide a more direct path for those with urgent but non-life-threatening conditions. Officials say the model allows for better coordination of care, since the center will have immediate access to a patient's medical history and ongoing treatment plans.
The Acute Care Center is designed to handle conditions that require prompt attention but do not rise to the level of a hospital emergency. This includes infections, minor injuries, and flare-ups of chronic illnesses. The goal is to offer a faster alternative to the ER for patients who are already familiar to Vanderbilt providers.
For now, the center will not be open to the general public or to patients from other health systems. Vanderbilt Health has not yet announced an official opening date, but construction and staffing preparations are underway. The move reflects a growing trend among large health systems to create exclusive, referral-based care hubs that prioritize continuity and efficiency over broad access.
