This one question may reveal whether your body is getting the rest it needs, study finds

A new study suggests that how old you feel might be a direct reflection of how well you sleep. Researchers have found that people who report feeling older than their actual age are more likely to suffer from poor sleep quality, insomnia symptoms, and irregular sleep patterns. The key question that may reveal your body's true rest status is simple: "How old do you feel?"

The study, published in a peer-reviewed journal, examined data from thousands of participants. It showed that those who felt significantly older than their chronological age also reported higher levels of daytime fatigue and difficulty falling or staying asleep. In contrast, individuals who felt younger or exactly their age tended to have more consistent sleep schedules and fewer complaints about tiredness.

Scientists believe this connection works both ways. Poor sleep can accelerate the feeling of aging, while a negative perception of aging can worsen sleep habits. Irregular patterns, such as going to bed at different times each night or waking up frequently, were strongly tied to feeling older. The findings suggest that a single, straightforward question about perceived age could serve as a quick screening tool for sleep health.

Experts advise that if you consistently feel much older than your actual years, it might be worth examining your sleep hygiene. Simple changes like maintaining a fixed bedtime, reducing screen time before sleep, and managing stress could help. The study emphasizes that rest is not just about hours in bed but about quality, consistency, and how refreshed you feel during the day.
