As the cost of living and hiring continues to rise across Hawaii, Queen's Health Systems is taking a new approach to workforce stability. The healthcare provider announced plans to build employee housing at its upcoming hospital in Kailua-Kona, marking the first time the organization has offered such a benefit.
The housing will be located on the same campus as the new hospital, which is currently under construction. Officials say the goal is to help recruit and retain staff in a region where affordable rentals are scarce. The project is expected to include a mix of unit types, though specific numbers and rental rates have not yet been released.
Hawaii has long struggled with high housing costs, and the problem has only worsened in recent years. For healthcare workers, the challenge is especially acute. Many commute long distances or take second jobs just to afford a place to live. Queen's hopes that on-site housing will ease that burden and make the Kona facility a more attractive place to work.
The hospital itself is part of a larger expansion effort by Queen's Health Systems. Once completed, it will bring a full range of medical services to the west side of the Big Island, reducing the need for residents to travel to Honolulu for specialized care.
Construction on the employee housing is expected to begin after the hospital is finished. Leaders at Queen's say they are watching the project closely, as it could serve as a model for future developments at other facilities.
