The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) Fay W. Boozman College of Public Health has launched a new initiative to tackle hypertension in pregnancy, a significant contributor to maternal mortality rates in the state. The Arkansas Prevention Research Center for Women’s Health, established in September 2024, is dedicated to addressing the alarming statistics surrounding maternal health in Arkansas.
With a substantial five-year grant of $5 million, the center plans to implement research-driven strategies to improve outcomes for expectant mothers. The initiative will focus on developing effective prevention methods and educational programs aimed at reducing the incidence of hypertension during pregnancy, which poses serious risks to both mothers and their infants.
This new center represents a critical step in addressing public health challenges in Arkansas, where maternal mortality rates are notably high. By prioritizing women's health and fostering community engagement, the center seeks to create a healthier environment for mothers and their children across the state.
