Health officials warn of possible measles exposure at LAX, Disneyland

Health officials warn of possible measles exposure at LAX, Disneyland

Public health officials have issued a warning regarding potential measles exposures at two of Southern California's most frequented locations: Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim. The alert comes amid concerns that recent international travel may be linked to the incidents.

Authorities indicate that individuals, possibly contagious with the highly infectious virus, were present at specific terminals within LAX on a recent date. Subsequently, exposures are also believed to have occurred at Disneyland on following days. Measles spreads easily through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes, with the virus remaining active in a space for up to two hours after they have left.

Health departments are urging anyone who was at these locations during the specified times to review their vaccination status and be vigilant for symptoms. Symptoms typically appear 7 to 14 days after exposure and include high fever, cough, runny nose, red watery eyes, and a distinctive red rash that spreads across the body. Individuals who develop symptoms are advised to contact their healthcare provider by phone immediately before visiting a clinic to prevent further spread.

Officials emphasize that vaccination is the most effective protection against measles. They recommend that all eligible individuals ensure they are up-to-date with the Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR) vaccine, which is highly effective at preventing the disease. This alert serves as a critical reminder of the importance of community immunity, especially in areas with high volumes of international visitors.
