April marks Preconception Health Month, a time when medical experts urge hopeful parents to focus on their health well before a positive pregnancy test. Dr. Christopher Moutos, a physician based in Arkansas, is emphasizing that the months leading up to conception are critical for both the mother and the baby's long-term health.
According to Dr. Moutos, the first step is scheduling a preconception checkup. This visit allows a doctor to review medical history, update vaccinations, and manage chronic conditions like diabetes or high blood pressure. He stresses that many women do not realize how much their overall health before pregnancy can affect fertility and the baby's development.
Nutrition is another cornerstone of his advice. Dr. Moutos recommends starting a daily prenatal vitamin with folic acid at least three months before trying to conceive. Folic acid is proven to reduce the risk of neural tube defects. He also advises cutting out alcohol, tobacco, and limiting caffeine intake.
For men, preconception health matters too. Dr. Moutos notes that sperm health can be improved by maintaining a healthy weight, avoiding excessive heat exposure, and eating a balanced diet rich in antioxidants.
Finally, he encourages couples to discuss their mental health and family planning goals openly. Reducing stress and ensuring a supportive environment can make a significant difference. Dr. Moutos reminds everyone that building a foundation of good health before pregnancy gives a child the best possible start in life.
